They should, because they’re interfering with your professional life!
This wonderful comment came in today from a woman I photographed the day before. Aside from the last few words – “you cared about the outcome as well, so thank you” – it’s a fairly ordinary testimonial. Thank you for making yesterday’s headshots so easy and enjoyable! Thank you for making it appear as if you were also concerned about the outcome.
Wow! That made me reflect on my work as a headshot photographer and the results I get.
I don’t think I treated this customer any differently than any other; I try to treat everyone equally, and I’m worried about the outcome of my headshot session. Headshot Photographer Oklahoma City is a photographer who keep in mind about your problems.
It did, however, cause me to reflect. I’m sure there are a lot of egotistical headshot photographers out there that are either tremendously busy or don’t care about the flow of clients since they believe they are “great headshot photographers” and the clients will come regardless. Perhaps there are some photographers who aren’t aware of this. Despite the fact that there aren’t many of them, their numbers are steadily increasing, thanks in large part to the availability of incredible new cameras that take care of all the technical details for you. Instead of depending on the camera to do all of the work, this “new era” of photographers usually lacks the whole set of skills required to be a successful headshot photographer; instead, they simply point and push.
Do we worry about what happens to our clients after they leave the studio, as headshot photographers? Should we be concerned about whether the headshots we supply them help them develop in their careers, whether they help them acquire jobs, or whether they help them move past the initial selection process and into the audition stage? In my opinion, we should.
Headshots and auditions
Although it is true that it is up to them to demonstrate their acting abilities once they arrive at the audition, and whether or not they are cast is ultimately determined by their auditioning abilities, many clients will not even get close to that stage unless they have a great headshot to get past the casting director’s keen eye.
Out of sheer professional duty, we should care whether or not we gave the client the right headshot, the right advice, and whether or not it’s working for them as an actor’s headshot, but we should also care morally whether or not we gave the client the right headshot, the right advice, and whether or not it’s working for them as an actor’s headshot. I’d hate to always hear from one of my clients that “their headshot was terrible,” “it doesn’t portray you very well,” or “it’s simply not you.” Go Here if you’re looking for a headshot photographer.
It’s a tough profession, and everyone expects to take some hits, but as long as there are some highs to offset the lows, we can handle it. If, on the other hand, an actor has a lousy headshot and is unaware of it since they paid a lot of money to a ‘professional headshot photographer,’ they will rapidly become angry with rejections and believe it is their fault. When it isn’t, it’s usually because they have a lousy headshot and/or received bad advice. Many performers’ egos are already fragile enough, so don’t add to their problems by being irresponsible with our attitudes.
